Written by A 17-year era ended today as coach Jeff Fisher was relieved of his duties as head coach of the Tennessee Titans.
The Tennessee Titans and Jeff Fisher have agreed to part ways. Fisher wasn’t fired, but he didn’t resign. So what happened?
Was the loss of the best position coach in the NFL the death blow to Jeff Fisher? The primary thought I had about the Titans over the past week was that Fisher is taking quite a while to to replace defensive line coach Jim Mashburn, now with the Philadelphia Eagles. Is this one reason why Titans management decided to split with Fisher?
Here is a quote from a statement by the Titans:
“After the season was complete, we had numerous discussions on the direction of the team and were pleased that we were moving forward with Jeff at the helm. Since that time, it became evident that consensus was increasingly hard to find and reality wasn’t matching the vision we discussed (emphasis mine). It is unfortunate that this decision is coming at this juncture, but we believe that we have reached the point where change is in the best interest of both parties.”
Consensus among whom? Fisher and his coaching staff? Fisher and team management? Fisher and owner Bud Adams? Stay tuned as the Nashville press dissects this messy situation.
I’m as surprised as everyone that Fisher was fired today. Regular readers of Titans Tracker also can guess that I am pleased. Even so, the Titans are a sinking ship in need of rescue, and fast.
Today’s developments shows us that anything is possible at any time. I would not count out a possible return by Vince Young, who as of this moment is still a Tennessee Titan.
