In the past, I have also bought jerseys representing players from other NFL teams, but lately, it’s been Titans jerseys all the way.

One of my favorite purchases was a Denver Broncos Reuben Droughns jersey. Droughns was a star for a New York minute, but he performed well for my fantasy football league team. I bought the Droughns jersey at a discount and decided to give it to the winner of the fantasy league I supervised.

I also consider myself to be a smart, cost-conscious shopper, so I always buy discounted jerseys. I don’t live in Tennessee, so I have bought all of my Titans jerseys on the Internet. Here’s what I usually do.

Periodically, I will go to NFLshop.com and visit the NFL Outlet. There you can find discounted jerseys and other items that represent your favorite team. FoxSports.com also has a nice online store. In fact, I bought my last Vince Young jersey there.

If you collect jerseys of players from multiple teams, one strategy to use is to check online stores shortly after a player has been cut or traded by his team. You may find a discounted jersey for half the price it would normally cost.

Fans of Vince Young who live outside of Tennessee may want to start shopping shortly after the Titans release its former franchise quarterback.

Goodbye, Jeff Fisher

Jeff Fisher

Tennessee Titans

Vince Young

A 17-year era ended today as coach Jeff Fisher was relieved of his duties as head coach of the Tennessee Titans. Fisher wasn’t fired, but he didn’t resign. So what happened?

Was the loss of the best position coach in the NFL the death blow to Jeff Fisher? The primary thought I had about the Titans over the past week was that Fisher is taking quite a while to to replace defensive line coach Jim Mashburn, now with the Philadelphia Eagles. Is this one reason why Titans management decided to split with Fisher?

Here is a quote from a statement by the Titans:

“After the season was complete, we had numerous discussions on the direction of the team and were pleased that we were moving forward with Jeff at the helm. Since that time, it became evident that consensus was increasingly hard to find and reality wasn’t matching the vision we discussed (emphasis mine). It is unfortunate that this decision is coming at this juncture, but we believe that we have reached the point where change is in the best interest of both parties.”

Consensus among whom? Fisher and his coaching staff? Fisher and team management? Fisher and owner Bud Adams? Stay tuned as the Nashville press dissects this messy situation.

I’m as surprised as everyone that Fisher was fired today. Regular readers of Titans Tracker also can guess that I am pleased. Even so, the Titans are a sinking ship in need of rescue, and fast.

Today’s developments shows us that anything is possible at any time. I would not count out a possible return by Vince Young, who as of this moment is still a Tennessee Titan.

Chuck Cecil fired by Titans

Jeff Fisher

Tennessee Titans

Vince Young

Tennessee Titans coach Jeff Fisher has fired defensive coordinator Chuck Cecil after two lackluster seasons for the Titans defense. Cecil was hired in 2009 to coach the Titans defense after Jim Schwartz was hired as head coach of the Detroit Lions.

Cecil said he was surprised by the firing, but ultimately concluded, “I’m the defensive coordinator, and we didn’t play as well as needed to on defense. [Jeff Fisher's] the head coach, and he has to do what he thinks is the right thing to move forward.”
The Titans defense struggle mightily under Cecil. At the end of the 2010 season, the defense was ranked 26th overall and 29th against the pass,

Cecil does not deserve all the blame for the defense’s poor play. The departure of Albert Haynesworth had a great impact on the defense, and Keith Bulluck’s absence showed in 2010 as Tennessee’s linebackers struggled to cover tight ends. However, Cecil has been accused of not being able to effectively make in-game adjustments.

Cecil’s defenses also lacked discipline. The unit racked up 128 penalties and cost the team 1,040 yards. Cecil himself also cost the team during games. On two occasions he was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct for his sideline antics.

Cecil is the third Titans coach to vacate his job over the past week. Defensive line coach extraordinaire Jim Washburn accepted a job with the Philadelphia Eagles, and running backs coach Craig Johnson was hired as quarterbacks coach by the Minnesota Vikings. Johnson’s hire raised speculation that Vince Young may become the Vikings’ next starting quarterback.

Source

Goodbye, Vince

Tennessee Titans

Vince Young

I imagined a number of scenarios that would result in Vince Young not finishing his career with the Tennessee Titans. After hearing him speak, I don’t expect him to be fired. However, he may resign if Bud Adams insists that he coach Vince Young in 2011.

I’m assuming that if Adams had intended to fire Fisher, he would have done so this morning. Instead of firing Fisher, Adams issued a statement this afternoon which includes the following:

“There are several things that need to be considered in this evaluation process, including Jeff’s history with our team, the labor situation and other challenges.”

How do you spell “other challenges”? V-I-N-C-E Y-O-U-N-G. Titans fans may not be stuck with Fisher and Young after all.

If I’m Young, I’m sweating right now, and here’s why.

During the press conference, I saw a weary but very confident head coach. Fisher repeated that he is currently under contract and wants to finish his career as the coach of the Tennessee Titans.

Fisher said the team needs stability at the quarterback position. His reaction to questions about Young was chilly and sharp. He did not sound like a man who had any interest in coexisting with Young or managing another meltdown by the talented but temperamental quarterback.

Additionally, I got the sense that he doesn’t feel as if he is on a hot seat. He knows if Adams fires him, other teams will see him as a hot commodity (although I and the writer of this article don’t know why).

Earlier today, Adams met with General Manager Mike Reinfeldt and Senior Executive V.P. Steve Underwood in Houston. Again, Adams did not send Reinfeldt and Underwood back to Nashville with a pink slip for Fisher.

I can only assume that Adams is having second thoughts about his favored son. Perhaps Adams is becoming convinced (pun not intended) that “his guy” may not be the best guy to play quarterback for the Titans in 2011.

The more I think about it, the more I realize it would be stupid (there’s no other way to say it) for Adams to elevate any player above a head coach, especially a petulant quarterback whose Kryptonite is boos coming from disappointed Titans fans.

As much as I think Fisher deserves to be fired (like, many year ago), he is still the head coach, and a respected one by his players and by many others around the league. Vince Young’s decision to undermine his coach may have ended his career in Nashville, and his statement “I’m not walking out on my team. I’m walking out on you (Fisher)” may be the quarterback’s famous last words as a Titan.

If Adams concludes that Young has become a locker room distraction, he may decide to cut the quarterback. Cutting Young only makes sense. VY will be owed $8.5 million in salary and a $4.25 million roster bonus once the new collective bargaining agreement is reached.

Is it conceivable that Bud Adams will decide in favor of his long-time head coach and say goodbye to his favored son? Will the Titans cut Vince Young?

Should the Titans Rebuild or Reload in 2011?

Jeff Fisher

Tennessee Titans

Vince Young

In a few days, we will find out a lot about Bud Adams and the Tennessee Titans. Both Young and Fisher are under contract, and Adams’ statements indicate that he intends to keep the feuding coach and quarterback on the team in 2011.

One has to wonder if Tennessee’s poor performance of late has changed Adams’ mind about Fisher, or if favored son Young is being questioned within Adams’ inner circle.

Fan sentiment among Titans diehards has swung heavily against both Fisher and Young. I’ve made it clear since the 2009 six-game losing streak and Fisher’s decision to don a Peyton Manning jersey at a fundraising event that I want the head coach to be issued his walking papers. Also, after defending Vince Young for the better part of my time as Titans Tracker blogger, I have destroyed my burnt-orange colored glasses and question whether the player with so much athletic upside will ever become a mature quarterback.

What will happen next week? Will Adams stand by his words and do nothing? Will he fire Fisher? Will he tell General Manager Mike Reinfeldt to cut ties with his favored son?

Many factors come in to play in Adams’ decision making process, including the status of the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement. I will not pretend to be interested in or knowledgeable about the CBA. I simply want the league and the player’s union to find a way to make a deal and make sure the players play a full schedule (16 games, not 18) in 2011.

Let’s explore the likelihood of a few scenarios and the implications on the Titans’ future prospects.

Both Fisher and Young stay – 50%
A younger Bud Adams was not hesitant to fire coaches, good or bad. The fact that Fisher has survived so long cannot simply be a result of his win-loss record or his playoff performance, neither of which is terribly impressive. I can only assume that an older Adams has decided that team stability is worthwhile, and that the quickest path to a Super Bowl victory is to keep his head coach, and consequently, the coach’s management style and philosophy, intact.

Adams is obviously emotionally invested in the quarterback who is a legend in the cities of Houston and Austin, Texas. Young was on his way to his best statistical season before injuring his thumb. Keeping the quarterback creates a sense of stability between the white lines; however, Young would have to (again) earn the respect of teammates who may have grown tired of his immaturity and lack of leadership.

Fisher goes, Young stays – 40%
Adams may look at the team’s 1-8 finish (I’m assuming the Titans will lose to the Colts in Indianapolis) and the disagreement involving his favored son and decide it’s time for the long-tenured coach to pack his bags and go. You also can’t help but wonder if Adams listens to fan sentiment, because many savvy fans think Titans players have quit on Fisher and that it’s time for a change.

Young goes, Fisher stays – 10%
Fisher may convince the elder Adams that everything is under control except the unruly quarterback forced upon him and the team in 2006. If Young is cut, Fisher will also have to convince Adams that a younger veteran quarterback can come in and help Tennessee reach the playoffs quickly.

I still believe the odds of Young playing for another team in 2011 presents too much risk for Adams. First, he would be essentially admitting failure, since it is believed that he forced then-General Manager Floyd Reese to draft Young in 2006. Also, if Young gets another starting job and plays well, Adams will bear ten times the regret Fisher has for letting go of Tampa Bay running back LeGarrette Blount.

Both Fisher and Young go – 0%
Letting go of both Fisher and Young puts the Titans in full rebuilding mode, and Adams, who turns 88 on January 3, may have no desire to undertake a rebuilding project. Ironically, showing the door to Young and Fisher might be the best thing for the Titans franchise in the long run, and doing so would make the largest number of Tennessee fans happy.

What do you think of the scenarios? What will Adams decide next week? Did Collins cool off after a hot start? The lack of scoring after the first quarter was likely due to both Fisher’s philosophy and Collins’ play.

To be fair, Chris Johnson got enough carries (24) to be effective. CJ had a 42-yard run and tallied 130 yards.

Despite the final score, the Houston Texans led in time of possession. The Titans defense shut down Arian Foster, but Matt Schaub racked up typical Matt Schaub stats: 325 yards passing, two touchdowns, and a pick.

Thankfully, there was not another fistfight involving Andre Johnson and Cortland Finnegan.

Randy Moss did not have a catch, and I’m not sure if he played at all.

Kenny Britt played, and for the second straight week, the Titans offense resembled the group that took the field during the first half of this season. Is this a recent conclusion?

Tennessee has been counting on the oft-injured Jason Jones to start at defensive tackle along with veteran Tony Brown. Jones is 6’6” and 275 pounds, which places him at a disadvantage in leverage and bulk.

According to reports earlier this season, the Titans had two opportunities to make a deal with the Washington Redskins for disgruntled defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth. The former Titan is currently suspended by the Redskins for conduct detrimental to the team.

Defensive tackle is not the only position at which Fisher underestimated or miscalculated the team’s talent level. While the team’s linebacking corps and secondary has had their share of lapses, they are not lacking in talent or potential. The biggest miscalculations in 2010 have been on offense. Let’s take a look.

Quarterback
Journeyman Kerry Collins played well as he replaced Vince Young in 2008 and helped the team win 13 games. Fisher stuck with Collins in 2009, and we all know the result: an 0-6 start.

Fisher and Titans General Manager Mike Reinfeldt decided that Collins was worth a $5.5 million base salary this season and kept him on the roster. The game manager has occasionally piled up stats, but his ability to throw the deep ball has diminished significantly. Should Fisher and Reinfeldt have signed a younger, experience backup to Young?

Running Back
Tampa Bay’s LeGarrette Blount is second among rookie running backs with 667 yards rushing. Blount spent the summer in Nashville and was released before the start of the regular season. In November, Fisher said he regrets cutting Blount “every day.” Did he expect a player with Blount’s talent to clear waivers? Yes, he did.

I did not want Blount on the roster, but Samkon Gado, a veteran running back of size, spent part of training camp with the Titans and played well. Tennessee chose not to keep Gado to help the goal-line offense, relying on talented. Chris Johnson serves as the team’s home run hitter and goal line bruiser.

Offensive Line
Tennessee chose not to bring back likely Hall-of-Fame center Kevin Mawae, who really wanted to play another season. The Titans decided to move left guard Eugene Amano to center and insert the inexperienced Leroy Harris at guard. “Catfish” Harris, by all accounts, has been terrible on the offensive line. Today, Amano was placed on injured reserve.

Yet another undersized defensive tackle

The player who replaced Amano on the roster — defensive tackle Malcolm Sheppard — is 6’2” and 280 pounds. Even after Fisher’s recent realization about the defensive line, he did not add bulk to the position.

Jeff Fisher and Mike Reinfeldt have not provided adequate depth and have overestimated the capabilities of players at key positions on the roster. This type of leadership is hurting the Titans, along with poor on-field performance and team dissension.
